Moving
Tips |
| |
| |
Be
organized and prepared...
- Make
sure you've taken care of truck rental or moving company reservations
weeks in advance. Keep an organized file with receipts and reservation
details for use in the event of confusion.
- Make
it easy on yourself and start packing early. Wittle your unpacked
belongings down to the bare necessities; seasonal clothing, unused
dishware, some of your office equipment, wall decor and nick-knacks
can come down pretty early.
- Pack
enough necessities with you to accomodate the needs of your family
for the length of the drive plus a day or two, just in case something
happens.
- Notify
the important people (i.e. utilities, landlord, post office,
phone) about when and where you're moving so that you can schedule
shut-off dates and mail forwards. Consider designing a postcard
to mail to your friends and family informing them of your new
address and contact information.
- Schedule
utilities to be connected in your new home a day or two before
you're scheduled to move in.
- Take
the necessary steps to register your children in their new school.
Prepare
for the trip...
- Know
your route — hours or days of drive time can be spared
with the careful planning of an intelligent route.
- Make
sure your vehicles are clean and well-oiled, mechanical repairs
only get more expensive on the road.
- Take
care of hotel reservations well in advance, and keep all of your
reservation documentation together for easy reference.
- Keep
multiple forms of payment with you during the move and be prepared
for additional unexpected expenses.
When
you get to your new home...
- Familiarize
your children and your pets with their new home.
- Locate
the numbers and locations to emergency facilities in your new
area.
- Take
the time to familiarize yourself with the major streets and highways.
- Introduce
yourself to your new neighbors.
- Update
your mailing and contact information with banks and creditors.
